About the winery
Bodegas Carlos Cárcel is a family winery in El Rebollar, a hamlet of Requena (Valencia), in the D.O. Utiel-Requena. The family's winemaking tradition goes back to the 1920s with the grandfather, Feliciano Cárcel, and the winery on Calle Bodegas was built in 1948. Brothers Carlos and Ernesto Cárcel began bottling Rebollar wine in 1982 and split the business in 1992, with Carlos keeping the family winery. He farms about 20 hectares spread over several nearby plots, with old-vine Bobal, Grenache, Tempranillo, Macabeo and Cabernet Sauvignon, and was one of the first to barrel-ferment Bobal. He makes whites, rosés, carbonic maceration and oak-aged reds, and sparkling wines. In 2022 the D.O. paid tribute to him at its winemakers' day as the first winery entered in its register.
