Bodegas Riko is a family winery in Xaló, in a small valley in northern Alicante and within the D.O. Alicante. Its story begins in 1921, when Francisco Mestre Gadea returned from Argentina, where he had emigrated after phylloxera, and started making wine on the ground floor of the family home. Later Sebastián Mestre Sirerol came up with raisin mistela, and in 1988 the winery moved to its current site. Today the fourth generation runs it, led by Óscar and Marina. They farm thirteen hectares of native varieties, bush-trained and dry-farmed, with vines over forty years old, and make wines, mistelas and liqueurs, bottled or in bulk. At the winery they welcome visitors and advise on their wines.
