Barranco Oscuro occupies a late 19th-century farmhouse in the Contraviesa range, in the Granada Alpujarra, within the Cumbres del Guadalfeo vino de la tierra. The farm's old cellar fell almost out of use after phylloxera, until at the end of 1979 Manuel Valenzuela and Rosa, together with their friend Jordi, bought part of the estate. They planted vines with local varieties, later brought in Cabernet Sauvignon, recovered Vigiriega and backed Garnacha. In 1984 they released their first bottled wine and over the years became a benchmark for organic wine, now natural wine. They make reds such as Garnata, La Familia, Rubaiyat and Varetúo, whites such as Salvaje Blanco and V de Valenzuela, rosés and sparkling wines.
