Bodega Casa Castillo

◍ Murcia

About the winery

Casa Castillo is a family estate on the Jumilla to Hellín road, on the Jumilla plateau within the Jumilla D.O., at around 700 metres. José Sánchez-Cerezo bought it in 1941, and in 1991 his son-in-law, Nemesio Vicente, restored the old winery to make wine from the estate's own grapes and champion Monastrell. Today it is run by the Vicente Sánchez-Cerezo siblings. Of its 420 hectares, 170 are organic vineyards on the north-facing slopes of the Sierra de El Molar, on sand and limestone gravel, with bush-trained, dry-farmed Monastrell, Garnacha and Syrah among almond and olive trees. Fermentation uses native yeasts and some whole bunches, and the wines are aged in used 500-litre barrels and then in large foudres.
