Bodega Municipal Señorío de Agüimes

◍ Las Palmas

About the winery

Señorío de Agüimes is the municipal winery of Agüimes, in south-east Gran Canaria within the Gran Canaria D.O., and the only one of its kind on the island. The municipality was wine country in the 15th and 16th centuries, but the vineyards dwindled until they disappeared in the 19th. In 2000 the town council promoted their recovery by bringing together almost all the grapes grown locally, which ripen under the trade winds and mild temperatures for much of the year on land once used for cereals. The name recalls the lordship the Catholic Monarchs granted to the Church after the conquest. Today it mainly makes a dry white and a red, sold at the Agüimes History Museum and other municipal venues.
