Bodega Soterana

◍ Santa Cruz de Tenerife

About the winery

Bodega Soterana is a small winery on the island of El Hierro, registered with the D.O. El Hierro and located in Los Llanillos, in the Valle del Golfo. It is run almost single-handedly by Carmelo, who has chaired the appellation's Regulatory Council, and the work is done by hand in the traditional way. He farms around half a hectare of vines, some of which may be more than a hundred years old; old plants are renewed by burying the vine so that it sprouts again, because drought makes replanting difficult. The winery makes a single dry wine, a blend of Vijariego Blanco (around 80%) and Gual, a rare native variety of the island, which has been fermented both in stainless steel tanks and in chestnut wood, in the traditional El Hierro manner.
