On soils of picón and ash grow varieties such as Listán Blanco, Listán Negro, Vijariego and Baboso Negro, many of them ungrafted since phylloxera never reached here. D.O. El HierroD.O. El HierroD.O. El HierroEl Hierro is a designation of origin (DO) whose production area is located on the island of El Hierro in the Canary Islands (Spain). It obtained Designation of Origin status in 1994 with only two wineries, something truly peculiar.
In the eighties, the Cabildo of El Hierro promoted the creation of the Central Vinícola Insular, whose facilities and machinery were placed at the service of local producers.
In the summer of 1986, the newly inaugurated winery carried out its first harvest, obtaining 230,000 litres of must from the grapes delivered by 93 winegrowers. With these litres the first wines of the “new era” were made and marketed under the “Vino herreño” label in white, red and rosé varieties.
It soon became clear that a Designation of Origin was needed to guarantee and safeguard the distinctive characters of the El Hierro wines and to distinguish their high quality. Thus, in 1990 the specific designation “El Hierro” was granted on a provisional basis, and between 1994 and 1996 the steps were followed to definitively create the El Hierro Designation of Origin with its corresponding constitution of the Regulatory Council.
