Bodegas 1808

About the winery

In the south of the Basque Country, surrounded by vines and lagoons, the town of Laguardia rises on a walled hill. Cars cannot drive through it because beneath the old town, winding underground, lie hidden the two hundred caves where some of the finest wines of Rioja Alavesa are still kept today. In one of them, six metres underground, the Martínez family began its winemaking activity in the 16th century. From the 19th century onwards, Perfecto Martínez undertook a new project which, over five generations, has preserved tradition and continues to make wines.
