Bodegas Maestro Tejero is the project of grower Alfredo Maestro in Peñafiel (Valladolid), in the heart of Ribera del Duero. He started in 1998 in a family garage in the town, by hand and without machinery, and today works old vines of native varieties in the Ribera and nearby areas watered by the Duratón, Botijas and Esgueva rivers, as well as high-altitude Garnacha in Navarredondilla (Ávila) and plots in Cigales. He ferments with yeasts from each vineyard and adds nothing to the wine. His single-plot wines include La Asperilla, La Olmera and La Guindalera, and his village wines Torrecilla del Pinar and Cuevas de Provanco. In his small winery in Peñafiel he ages wines in 500-litre barrels, chestnut casks and oloroso butts.
