After years of studying the soil and environmental conditions of his wife's estate, Joaquín Villagrán showed that the high areas of the province of Granada, specifically the so-called Hoya de Baza in the foothills of the Sierra de Cazorla, were ideal for planting quality red grapes. Drawing on his knowledge of wine, in the 1970s he decided to plant his first vineyard of red grapes, even though Andalusia was a land of white wines.
