In the 19th century, the Barbier family owned 1,500 hectares of vineyards gathered in a large estate: Le Martinet, in France. In her famous novel, Elisabeth Barbier named Le Martinet Mogador. In 1870, because of phylloxera, Leon Barbier looked in Spain for the grapes he lacked in France and founded a winery in Tarragona under the name of René Barbier, his son. In the 1940s, René Barbier's sons, Leon and René, took the initiative of bottling the first Priorats.
