Granxa D’Outeiro

◍ Ourense

About the winery

Granxa D'Outeiro is in Francelos, next to Ribadavia, in the D.O. Ribeiro, between the Outeiro and Miño rivers. It is a former monastic grange of the monastery of Santa María de Melón, dating from the second half of the 12th century, and is listed as a site of cultural interest by the Xunta de Galicia. Its current owners have restored the estate with a 2.8-hectare trellised vineyard, between 130 and 200 metres above sea level on sábrego soils of weathered granite, growing native grapes respectfully and studying the yeasts of the site. They describe themselves as newcomers to the craft and make a young wine, Francelus, in tribute to the village, and a wine for ageing, Granxa D'Outeiro. They show visitors the estate and tell its story and restoration, and there is also a boutique hotel.
