See the D.O. Ribeira Sacra →Ourense brings together four denominations in a small area, so choosing a base is easy: Ribadavia, capital of the Ribeiro and of its Jewish quarter, or Verín, at the foot of the Monterrei castle, work as the perfect camp among treixadura and godello vineyards.
In the Ribeira Sacra, the former monasteries turned into hotels, such as the parador above the Sil canyon, offer memorable nights. There are country houses clinging to the terraces, thermal hotels in the capital and simple lodgings in O Barco de Valdeorras.
Ourense's table is hearty: pulpo á feira, cachena beef, androlla and winter botelo, and the lamprey of the Miño stewed à la bordelaise when the season arrives. For dessert, the bica of Trives and roasted chestnuts.
The treixadura whites of the Ribeiro enhance shellfish and empanada, while the mencía and godello of Valdeorras and the Ribeira Sacra sustain the meat stews. Hillside wines for a cuisine of mountain and river.
The great spectacle is the Ribeira Sacra: canyons of the Sil and the Miño explored by catamaran, dizzying viewpoints and heroic vineyards on terraces. In the capital, the As Burgas thermal springs and the pools of the Miño invite you to bathe even in winter.
Ribadavia preserves a living Jewish quarter and historic wineries, Allariz boasts a medieval old town beside the Arnoia, and the Monterrei castle dominates Verín. Hiking, thermal tourism and heritage go hand in hand in every region.
The Romanesque monasteries of the Ribeira Sacra, such as Santo Estevo de Ribas de Sil, punctuate a monastic landscape unique in Galicia. The cathedral of Ourense guards its Pórtico do Paraíso, a thematic replica by Master Mateo, and the Roman bridge crosses the Miño.
Ribadavia celebrates its Sephardic past with the Festa da Istoria, and thermalism sinks its roots into Roman times. Among pazos, hórreos (raised granaries) and hermitages, the culture of wine intertwines with centuries of Galician history.
Ourense is enjoyed slowly in the open air: the canyons of the Sil offer areas and viewpoints for motorhomes, and the surroundings of the Miño reservoir in Castrelo allow camping beside the water. The Invernadoiro Nature Park holds nature in its purest state.
To the south, the Larouco sierra and the heights of Valdeorras offer silence and stars, and the open-air thermal pools are a luxury after the route. A mountain territory ideal for a slow journey by motorhome.
