About the winery
Viñedos de La Alcarria makes its wines under the Alto de Pioz brand, a farm and winery on the Alcarria plateau at Pioz, in Guadalajara, within the D.O. Mondéjar. The project wants its wines to express the terroir and biodiversity of La Alcarria, and to that end it tends old and century-old vineyards with organic practices and precision viticulture, and works to rescue native varieties of the plateau. Winemaking is led by Aurelio García Herraiz, a chemist by training and a specialist in native Spanish varieties. Its wines are made in limited quantities: Alto de Pioz Tinto, Alto de Pioz Clarete and Dominio de Pioz. The Catando el Páramo visit tours the vineyard and winery and ends with a tasting of four wines with appetisers, and the estate also offers accommodation and events.
