Wine Tourism in I.G.P. Ribeiras Do Morrazo
Ribeiras do Morrazo is a territory full of vitality. A sustainable landscape, and a beautiful one too, that dominates this whole region in which the local economy plays a leading role. And what can be said of its wines? Fresh and oceanic
This is a relatively new PGI. In January 2018, the European Union recognised it with this quality seal and the new Protected Geographical Indication was established in the various municipalities that we will see in the following section. The goal was achieved thanks in part to the determination of a group of winegrowers who had been making wines since ancient times, together with the support of local councils in the area. They were the ones who submitted the request. And now, it is a full reality.
A unique area for unique wines
Galicia is an area that presents great climatic heterogeneity due to its orography, the type of relief found there and its marked marine influence. This is how the so-called oceanic-humid climate is formed. Something that is perfectly fulfilled within the area of the PGI Ribeiras do Morrazo, due to its mountain ranges that protect the vines from various inclemencies and the influence of the estuaries (rías) and the sea (almost all of the vineyard hectares are at very low altitude (below 150 metres above sea level). This wine region extends across the coastal area of the Morrazo Peninsula and includes the inner reaches of the rías of Vigo and Pontevedra.
The land and the climate
The geographical area delimited in the PGI Ribeiras do Morrazo extends along the Atlantic coast (the entire Morrazo Peninsula and a good part of the rías of Pontevedra and Vigo). Specifically, the territory covered by the PGI Ribeiras do Morrazo is made up of the municipal areas of Bueu, Cangas de Morrazo, Marín, Moaña, Pontevedra, Poio, Redondela and Vilaboa, all of them located in the province of Pontevedra, on the coast. Let us now see, then, how that direct influence of the territory from which they come is transferred to the final product, to each wine.
Zones
The soils are also favourable. They have moderate acidity, do not retain too much water and have practically no organic matter content on the surface. They are old soils, of good depth, that stimulate sun exposure. Once again, another point in favour of the correct development of the vineyards.
Microclimates
The temperatures do not drop below an average of 9 ºC in the coldest months, which means the absence of frosts. Rainfall is abundant, but decreases in the hottest months, in which the oceanic climate has Mediterranean influences, with temperatures approaching 20 ºC. Perfect conditions for the cultivation of our beloved vine.
The new PGI will host dry red and white wines, made with Albariño, Caíño blanco, Godello, among other varieties that we will see below, in the case of the whites, and with Brancellao, Caíño tinto, Pedral, Mencía and Sonsón and a few more varieties, in the case of the reds. We will now mention them all.These are, by grape type, the varieties accepted within the Protected Geographical Indication of Ribeiras do Morrazo:
- Varieties of white grapes: Albariño, Caíño Blanco, Godello, Loureira, Treixadura, Branco lexítimo and Torrontés.
- Varieties of red grapes: Brancellao, Caíño Tinto, Pedral, Espadeiro, Loureiro Tinto, Mencía and Sousón.
