The D.O. Montsant hits the road with a concrete goal: to train tomorrow's professionals. Its tasting tour through hospitality and sommelier schools brings the appellation's wines closer to those who will soon serve and recommend them.
Starting in January, the appellation visits hospitality and sommelier schools across Catalonia to explain first-hand what sets Montsant wines apart. The idea is simple and powerful: if future sommeliers and floor managers know a D.O. well, they will defend it better before the customer.
These tastings are part of the celebration of an anniversary of the appellation, a good moment to look back and, above all, to sow for the future. Training professionals is a long-term investment that rarely fails.
The highlight of these sessions is the zoning tasting. Instead of trying isolated wines, students taste examples that represent different areas and soils of Montsant, to perceive how the terrain carries over into the glass.
This approach goes beyond memorising tasting notes: it teaches you to reason about wine, to connect what you taste with the landscape that produces it.
The sommelier and the floor staff are the last link between the winery and the person who drinks. A well-judged recommendation, told with knowledge, can turn a meal into a memorable experience and win a customer's loyalty forever.
That is why it makes so much sense for an appellation to invest time in the classroom. It is not just about selling more bottles today, but about ensuring that in a few years there are professionals able to tell the story of these wines well.
What is learned in a tasting gains depth when it is completed with a visit to the territory. Walking the vineyards of Montsant, seeing the slate slopes and speaking with the winemakers fixes the concepts better than any notes, because the landscape explains what words only hint at.
It is the logical close of the whole training process: first you taste, then you understand and, finally, you set foot on the terrain that gave rise to these wines. Whoever walks the region grasps at once why garnacha and cariñena express themselves here in such a recognisable way.
Anyone who wants to follow the thread of this region can discover its wines and its landscape by exploring the designations of origin and organising a wine-tourism getaway through the area.
