Los vinos de Rueda y Ribera del Duero apuestan por el mercado puertorriqueño

Two of the Castile and León appellations with the strongest pull beyond our borders are joining forces once again. This time the destination is Puerto Rico, a small market but one with a discerning palate and cultural ties that work in favour of Spanish wine.

A partnership with a track record

Rueda and Ribera del Duero share far more than geography. They share a consumer who associates them with quality and an export strategy that, when coordinated, multiplies its impact. It is not the first time their regulatory boards have travelled together outside Spain, and that previous experience shows in the way each initiative is planned.

The logic is simple: the fresh, aromatic white of Rueda and the full-bodied red of Ribera del Duero complement each other on a wine list. Presenting them as a pair lets you offer the importer a complete proposal, one that can cover everything from the aperitif to the main course.

Why Puerto Rico

The island has a restaurant and distribution network that values European products, along with a historic relationship with Spain that opens doors. Both appellations already had a certain presence there, so this is not starting from scratch: the aim is to consolidate and gain visibility against competitors from other producing countries.

What is on the table

Campaigns of this kind usually combine actions aimed at the professional trade with others designed for the enthusiast. Among the most common we find:

  • Guided tastings for importers, distributors and specialist press.
  • Pairing dinners that showcase the wine in its natural context, the table.
  • Talks and training on the soil, climate and grape varieties of each area.

The goal is not just to sell cases, but to educate the market's palate so it knows what to expect from a Rueda or a Ribera del Duero label.

What this move says about the sector

The fact that two powerful appellations choose to cooperate rather than compete abroad is a sign of maturity. Spanish wine stakes much of its future overseas, and arriving with a solid appellation-of-origin brand carries more weight than doing so winery by winery. Puerto Rico will be a good barometer to gauge whether that collaboration translates into a stable presence.

If you are keen to get to know these regions first-hand, the best thing is to visit them. In our winery directory you can locate producers from both appellations and plan a visit to taste, right there in the vineyard, what later triumphs thousands of miles away.
