ProWein, the great professional wine and spirits fair, confirmed its return to Düsseldorf after the pandemic postponements. Thousands of exhibitors from dozens of countries gathered to resume business and take the sector's pulse.
ProWein is one of the world's benchmark fairs for the wine and spirits trade. After a period marked by cancellations, its return to the Düsseldorf exhibition grounds meant much more than a reunion: it was a sign of normalisation for a sector that lives on direct contact, on the shared tasting and on the handshake that seals a deal.
The event brought together thousands of exhibitors from more than sixty countries, with their sights set on a strictly professional audience.
ProWein is not a show for the general public, but a meeting point for those who bring wine to the table. Among the regular attendees are:
That professional character is what makes the fair such a reliable thermometer: what moves through its aisles usually anticipates what we will later see on menus and in shops.
The organisers did not hide the difficulty of the moment. Preparations for the edition were shaped by the course of the pandemic and by a climate of doubt about international attendance. Pulling off an event of this magnitude in such a scenario was, in itself, a bet on the sector's recovery.
In an increasingly digital world, one might think that fairs like ProWein are losing their point. The opposite is true. Wine is sold by tasting it, and no screen replaces a glass poured by the person who makes it. These gatherings allow small wineries to find a distributor in distant markets and buyers to discover gems beyond the big brands.
Many of the trends that emerge at international fairs end up translating into experiences for the visitor: single-plot wines, organic production, the recovery of native varieties. What is negotiated there can, sooner or later, be experienced on the ground.
