The Wine and Cava Route of Ribera del Guadiana adds a Network of Viewpoints in Tierra de Barros: six spots chosen to take in the landscape of vineyards and olive groves from the outside, in the open air and without rushing.

Wine tourism that heads outdoors

After a few years in which many travellers sought open-air plans, the Extremaduran region of Tierra de Barros has bet on what it does best: showing off its land. The Network of Viewpoints was born precisely from that idea, to highlight a landscape shaped over centuries by the vine and the olive tree, and to offer visitors a different way of approaching a wine-growing area without having to step into a barrel room.

A landscape with centuries of history

What you see from these viewpoints is no accident. The agricultural footprint of Tierra de Barros goes back a long way, and on the horizon vineyards, olive groves and clay soils that give the area's wines their character live side by side. It is a land where the natural and the cultural intertwine, and where each season changes the picture: the intense green of spring, the golden hue of summer and the bustle of the harvest when autumn arrives.

Six spots to stop and look

The initiative spreads the viewpoints across several towns in the region, so that they can be linked together on a single route. The locations include enclaves of heritage and scenic value, designed for stopping, breathing and grasping the scale of the Extremaduran vineyard:

• Almendralejo, one of the wine-growing hearts of the area.
• Santa Marta de los Barros, with its open-country surroundings.
• Villalba de los Barros, beside its castle.
• Torremejía, in the vicinity of its palace.

The idea is simple and it works: arrive, park nearby, walk a few metres and take in the panorama of the sea of vines and olive trees that defines this part of Extremadura.

How to fit it into a getaway

The viewpoints are a good complement for anyone who already has a winery visit in mind. You can book a tasting in the morning and spend the afternoon touring a couple of these spots, or the other way round. If you are travelling with children or with people who don't fancy a long indoor plan, this network offers plenty of possibilities because it requires no timetables or tickets.

To prepare the route it's worth checking in advance which wineries are open to the public and on which days, since in rural areas visits usually require prior booking. You can take a look at the available options in all the wineries and organise the rest of the day around a tasting.
