The V.T. Liébana has 1 winery you can visit in south-west Cantabria, in the Liébana district, a large basin ringed by limestone walls at the foot of the Picos de Europa. The area covers six municipalities, Potes, Pesaguero, Cabezón de Liébana, Camaleño, Cillorigo de Liébana and Vega de Liébana, with four valleys that meet at Potes. A destination that combines mountain vineyards, hiking and the monastery of Santo Toribio.
The mountains hold back Atlantic weather fronts and create a climate with Mediterranean traits within the Cantabrian coast, with dry summers, 600 to 700 mm of rain a year and sharp contrasts between day and night. The vines grow on steep slopes over limestone, slate and sandstone, with acidic soils. Mencía, Tempranillo, Garnacha or Graciano among the reds, and Palomino, Chardonnay, Godello or Gewürztraminer among the whites, give dry, structured wines, good with cocido lebaniego stew and quesucos de Liébana cheeses.
