About the winery
A family winery founded in 1988 in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, in Rioja Alta, by Abel Mendoza and his wife Maite Fernández. Abel, who carries on the winegrowing legacy of his father and grandfather, looks after the vineyards, while Maite is in charge of winemaking. The family farms around 23 hectares of its own vines spread over 43 plots using integrated and biodynamic methods, and vinifies each plot separately to reflect its character. It makes some 18 wines and about 80,000 bottles a year under two brands: Jarrarte for young wines and Abel Mendoza for barrel-aged reds and whites, including single-variety whites from grapes such as Torrontés, Malvasía, Viura and Tempranillo Blanco. Visits must be arranged in advance with the winery.
