Logroño seduces with its atmosphere and its Calle Laurel, while Santo Domingo de la Calzada welcomes the pilgrims of the Camino in its parador. To the south, Calahorra and the villages of the sierra complete the province of La Rioja with peaceful lodgings among the vines.
La Rioja's vegetable garden is famous: peppers, artichokes and seasonal vegetables, alongside patatas a la riojana with chorizo and lamb chops grilled over vine cuttings.
Nothing pairs better with a red of the D.O.Ca Rioja, of tempranillo and garnacha aged in barrel, than these grilled dishes; and its viura whites refresh a menestra. The pinchos of Logroño's Calle Laurel top off the day.
Beyond the wineries, La Rioja surprises. San Millán de la Cogolla holds the monasteries of Yuso and Suso, cradle of the Spanish language and a World Heritage Site, and Nájera its royal pantheon.
The Sierra de la Demanda and the Cameros invite hiking, while the dinosaur footprint sites of Enciso and Munilla fascinate families. The Ebro and its banks round off a mosaic of plans between tastings.
La Rioja is a land of words: at Suso the Glosas Emilianenses were written, the first traces of the Castilian Romance. The Camino de Santiago left jewels such as the cathedral of Santo Domingo, with its henhouse and the legend of the rooster.
Wine culture can be felt in the museums dedicated to its making in the wine-growing region, and in festivals such as the Batalla del Vino in Haro, where tradition is lived to the fullest.
La Rioja's outdoors unfolds in the Sierra de la Demanda and the Iregua valley, with campsites among beech woods and trout-filled rivers ideal for summer.
The Ebro traces motorhome routes among the vineyards, and spots such as the Sierra de Cebollera Natural Park, with its pine woods and waterfalls, let you camp before heading down to the wineries. Sleeping beneath the stars of the Cameros has something of a ritual about it.
