In the 4th century BC, more than 2,400 years ago, the Celtiberians who inhabited the Peñafiel area were already producing wine. The Romans who occupied the region in the 1st century BC consolidated its cultivation and introduced new varieties. After the Reconquest by the Christian kingdoms in the 11th century, Cistercian monks of French origin settled near Peñafiel brought new growing techniques that have lasted to this day.
