See the D.O. Cigales →Valladolid gathers some of the most prestigious denominations of Castilla y León, so sleeping next to the vineyard is easy. Peñafiel, in the shadow of its castle, and the villages of the Ribera del Duero offer rural houses and charming hotels among the vines of tinta del país.
To the south, the comarca of Rueda invites you to stay in Medina del Campo or La Seca to taste verdejos, while Cigales, north of the capital, adds rural lodgings among the vines. The city of Valladolid serves as a comfortable base from which to fan out to all the wineries.
The flagship dish is lechazo roasted in a wood-fired oven, tender and golden, which finds its perfect match in an aged red from the Ribera del Duero. There is no shortage of cured sheep's cheeses, Castilian soup or sweetbreads, hearty flavours of the interior.
The whites of Rueda, made from verdejo, wonderfully accompany the asparagus of Tudela de Duero and river fish. To finish, the convent pastries and the sweets of Medina del Campo are enjoyed with a semi-sparkling wine from Cigales or a good red from Toro.
The Duero and the Pisuerga shape a province of castles and historic towns. Peñafiel dazzles with its elongated fortress atop the hill, Tordesillas keeps the memory of Juana la Loca and Medina del Campo evokes medieval fairs and the will of Isabella the Catholic.
Between one vineyard and the next you can explore the pine woods of Tierra de Pinares, navigate the Canal de Castilla or stroll through Urueña, the town of books. The autumn harvests fill the fields with activity and offer a perfect excuse to discover the riverside villages.
Valladolid was the court of the Habsburgs and retains that legacy: the House of Cervantes, the National Sculpture Museum with its polychrome carvings and an Easter Week of renowned religious imagery. Churches, palaces and squares tell the past of a weighty Castilian capital.
Peñafiel Castle houses a wine museum that explains the winegrowing culture of the Ribera del Duero, and the underground cellars dug beneath the villages reveal centuries of tradition. Rueda, Cigales and Toro complete a map where history and oenology go hand in hand.
In the open air, the banks of the Duero and the Pisuerga offer green areas and campsites where you can pitch a tent or park the motorhome close to the water. Tierra de Pinares, with its extensive resin-pine forests, is a pleasant setting for slow travel between wineries.
The Canal de Castilla, with its towpaths, invites bike routes and stops beside historic locks. Winegrowing villages such as Peñafiel or those of the Cigales comarca serve as a base for touring vineyards in your own vehicle without giving up nature.
