In southern Spain, between the snow-capped peaks of Sierra Nevada and the Mediterranean Sea, lies the Sierra de la Contraviesa, which, with a length of 15 kilometres and an average altitude of 1,250 metres above sea level, is one of the highest wine regions in Europe. The shallowness of its sloping soils of schist, mica schist and quartzite, known locally as “tosca”, ensures medium-low yields in kilos per hectare.
