Wine tourism in D.O.P. Granada

Andalusia, and Granada in particular, have a great tradition in the cultivation of the vine and the making of wines. The wealth and progress of this land is clearly linked to the fusion of cultures that have left their imprint on it throughout history.

A unique region for unique wines

The identifying back label D.O.P. QUALITY WINE OF GRANADA began to be a reality with the bottling of the 2009 harvest.

After completing five years as Quality Wine of Granada, work was carried out to obtain recognition of the ‘Designation of Origin’ level.

The Association of Wineries and Vineyards of Granada was set up; this association continued with the procedures to achieve the aforementioned recognition, which would arrive on Friday 23 February 2018 with the publication in the Official Bulletin of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Order of 19 February 2018, whereby the Regulation governing the operation of the REGULATORY COUNCIL OF THE PROTECTED DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN GRANADA is approved.

The land and the climate

Grape production has traditionally been linked to the high and middle zones of the mountain systems of the province, which causes significant temperature swings and very low temperatures, lengthening and improving the ripening process. The average altitude of the Granada vineyards is around 1,200 metres.

Zones

It presents variable compositions of slate and clay that give ideal conditions to the Granada wines. The orography of terraces, hillsides and slopes means that the work in the vines requires more labour than in other cases, as the harvesting process cannot be mechanised.

Microclimates

With Mediterranean and continental influence. The temperature and the cool air currents of Sierra Nevada produce a beneficial effect that predisposes the grapes to a greater development of polyphenols which give the wine its colour, its smoothness, its tannic structure.

The types of wine protected by the Protected Designation of Origin Granada mention are the following:

• White, rosé and red wines: which may be dry, off-dry, semi-sweet and sweet, according to the residual sugar content, in accordance with the current regulations.
• Sparkling wines and quality sparkling wines: they may be, according to their sugar content expressed as fructose and glucose, including any sucrose, brut nature, extra brut, brut, extra dry, dry, semi-dry and sweet, in accordance with the current regulations.
• Naturally sweet or late-harvest wines, applicable to the wine of over-ripened grapes made without artificial increase of its strength and with the alcohol coming entirely from the fermentation, with a natural alcoholic strength exceeding 15% vol. and an acquired volumetric alcoholic strength not lower than 13% vol.
