Bodegas Amaren is the second project of the Cañas family, owners of Bodegas Luis Cañas in Villabuena, and is located in Samaniego, in Rioja Alavesa (D.O.Ca. Rioja). Its name pays tribute to Ángeles Herrera, wife of Luis Cañas, and means «mother» in Basque. The first wine, an old-vine Tempranillo, was made in 1995; Juan Luis Cañas later bought and restored Samaniego's former cooperative, which keeps its concrete tanks and a 16th-century underground cellar where the wine is aged. The winery has some 70 hectares, mostly bush vines close to the winery, and makes wines such as Ángeles de Amaren, Amaren 60 and single-vineyard wines like El Regollar and El Cristo de Samaniego. Winemaking is led by Jon Cañas, the founder's grandson.
