Bodegas J.F. Iradier is a family winery in the Barrio de Matarredo, in Samaniego, in the heart of Rioja Alavesa and within the D.O.Ca. Rioja. The family tends its vines and makes its wines itself, with hand harvesting and traditional foot-treading of the grapes. Its story begins in the so-called press winery, which still houses the lever press bought by great-grandfather Domingo Iradier, linked by tunnels to hand-dug 17th-century cellars and to the new winery, built in 2000. It makes Sayón Tinto, a carbonic maceration red based on Tempranillo; Sayón Rosado, made by bleeding; and Juan Francisco Iradier, its signature old-vine wine aged in French oak. The guided visit covers all three parts of the winery and ends with a tasting of three wines and local produce.
