Bodegas Viriatus

◍ Zamora

About the winery

Bodegas Viriatus is a family winery in Brime de Urz, the Zamora village that hosts the headquarters of the D.O.P. Valles de Benavente. It was founded in 1974 and keeps cellars dug into the ground, typical of these valleys, where traditional processes sit alongside mechanised ones. Its name pays tribute to Viriathus, the Lusitanian leader who resisted Rome, in an area whose Roman remains speak of its long winemaking tradition. It works with historic local varieties: Verdejo, Tempranillo and Prieto Picudo make the Viriatus wines, and with Tinta de Toro it produces the Alboca range, with oak-aged and crianza versions, whose label recalls a musician from the Pórtico de la Majestad of the Collegiate Church of Toro.
