See the D.O. Tierra Del Vino De Zamora →Zamora concentrates a surprising wine wealth, with Toro at the forefront and its tinta de Toro reds. To sleep near the vineyard, the town of Toro itself and its surroundings offer rural houses and charming lodgings among old vines on the terraces of the Duero.
To the west, Fermoselle and the Arribes del Duero Natural Park have rural houses overlooking the river canyons, ideal for tasting the wines of Arribes. The capital of Zamora, with its monumental old town, also serves as a quiet base for touring the wineries.
The Zamora larder is dry-farmed and intensely flavoured: arroz a la zamorana with pork products, Aliste beef, bacalao a la tranca and seasonal mushrooms. These are stews that call for a red from Toro, powerful and full-bodied, raised under the sun of the plateau.
The Zamorano sheep's cheese, with Denomination of Origin, and the meat of Sanabria complete the table, while the Sanabrian-style octopus recalls the legacy of muleteers and fairs. The wines of Tierra del Vino de Zamora and of Arribes accompany cured meats and roasts with character.
The great natural draw is the Arribes del Duero Natural Park, with its dizzying canyons, vulture colonies and river cruises between Spain and Portugal. Fermoselle, perched above the river, is a town of underground cellars and stone alleys that deserves an unhurried visit.
To the north, Lake Sanabria, the largest of glacial origin on the peninsula, offers bathing, hiking and slate villages such as Puebla de Sanabria. Between vineyards and sierras, the province combines wine routes with landscapes of water and mountain that are little crowded.
Zamora boasts the largest ensemble of urban Romanesque art in Europe, with a score of golden-stone churches and a cathedral crowned by its singular scale-covered dome. Its Easter Week, sober and thronged, is recognised as one of the oldest and most moving.
The town of Toro adds its Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor and a winegrowing tradition of centuries, with historic wineries and cellars beneath the houses. The hillforts, the medieval bridges and the towns of the Arribes tell of a border past between León and Portugal.
In the open air, Lake Sanabria is the great destination: its natural park has campsites by the water and motorhome areas, perfect for bathing, paddling and taking routes among oak woods and slate mountains in the northwest of Zamora.
To the south, the Arribes del Duero offer spectacular landscapes for slow travel, with viewpoints over the canyons and winegrowing villages such as Fermoselle. The banks of the Duero as it passes through Toro complete a map of camping among vineyards, water and quiet nature.
