The red grape Prieto Picudo stands out, native to the northwest of Castile and León, alongside Tempranillo, Mencía and Garnacha, as well as whites such as Verdejo and Malvasía. Its lively, aromatic rosés and fresh-fruit reds are characteristic, often made with the traditional madreo method. A flat landscape of brown soils and an extreme continental climate, ideal with roast lamb and cured meats.
Today, in the northwest of the province of Zamora we find the production of this protected designation of origin, specifically in the valleys of the Esla, Tera, Órbigo and Eria rivers, and it is made up of 62 municipalities. But the origin of vineyard cultivation in this area goes back far in time, as many documents from the Middle Ages demonstrate.
The deep roots that the vine and wine have and have had in this region are reflected in the multitude of wineries spread on the outskirts of all its villages. The vines of Benavente are located at about 740 metres, around 80-100 metres lower than those of León, which makes the climate less cold, giving the variety different characteristics.
This Protected Designation of Origin arises from the need to recognise the quality and unique typicity of the wines made in this area, marked by a continental, extreme and arid climate, with little rainfall, great luminosity, very cold winters and dry, hot summers.
