Celler Mas Dels Frares
About the winery
Mas dels Frares is the experimental winery of the Faculty of Oenology at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, located in Constantí, a few kilometres from the Tarragona campus. The university has a 7-hectare estate there with vines of different varieties and a winery with a classroom, laboratory, winemaking hall, climate-controlled ageing cellar and bottling area. It is where students learn viticulture and winemaking by working in the vineyard and the cellar, and where issues such as irrigation or planting density are studied. Most of the wine is used for teaching and part of it for research, and the estate holds a collection of around seventy local varieties whose winemaking potential is being analysed.
