Wine tourism in D.O. Tarragona
The production area of DO Tarragona features two clearly differentiated zones. The Camp de Tarragona zone, with the counties of Alt Camp, Baix Camp and the Tarragonès, and the zone of the Ribera d’Ebre. Our territory lies between the river Ebro and the Mediterranean Sea.
A unique area for unique wines
The amphora on the logo of the Tarragona Denomination of Origin sums up the age-old presence of winegrowing in this Denomination of Origin. It also links us to the Roman Empire and its cultural legacy, since the amphora was the ceramic vessel used in antiquity to store and transport wine.
The Roman Empire was the true driving force behind the wines of the counties of Tarragona; the territories of Tarraconensis stood out for their wines and were considered the most privileged of the empire. Tarragona has always had a strong vocation for exporting wine, so much so that Calle Real in Tarragona, next to the Port, was an area where a great many wineries were concentrated, shipping their wines throughout Europe.
The DO Tarragona as such was created in 1945 and its first regulations were approved by the Ministry of Agriculture on 25 March 1947. This denomination of origin was initially created to protect liqueur wines, the so-called Classic Tarragona wines. It was later, in 1959, that dry and also semi-sweet wines began to be protected.
Zones
One characteristic of DO Tarragona is the heterogeneity of its soils.
The soils of the Camp de Tarragona county are mostly from the Miocene, calcareous and light soils; the soils of the Ribera d’Ebre zone are from the Tertiary era, calcareous and stony, along with Quaternary alluvial deposits.
Microclimates
In DO Tarragona the climate is Mediterranean with continental influences in the higher part of the Ebro Valley. The vineyards are affected by the marinada and the mistral in the Camp de Tarragona zone and by the mistral in the Ribera d’Ebre zone.
This Mediterranean climate is characterised by mild winters and much hotter summers, although tempered by the sea breeze. The average annual rainfall in the Camp de Tarragona is 475 mm and in the Ribera d’Ebre 650 mm.
In the Ribera d’Ebre the winters are cold and the summers hot and very bright. The development of the vine in this type of climate is optimal and yields high-quality grapes that are also perfect for making liqueur wines.
White grapes predominate over red grapes in DO Tarragona. The area planted with white varieties accounts for 83% of the total surface and 17% corresponds to red varieties.
