About the winery

Michelini i Mufatto is the Bierzo project of Gerardo Michelini, an Argentine grower, his wife Andrea Mufatto and their son Manu, who looks after the winemaking. César Márquez and Raúl Pérez encouraged them to make wine in Bierzo, and their winery is in Toral de Merayo, in a stone building around two centuries old where they keep old foudres and clay amphorae by the potter Juan Padilla. They farm very old vines organically, mostly Mencía, on clay soils with slate and quartz. The reds are foot-trodden in amphorae, sometimes with whole bunches, with short macerations and ageing in clay and in used oak and chestnut barrels. Their wines include Motorpsico, En El Camino, A Merced and Encinado.
