Bierzo →For a getaway among the vineyards of León, it pays to choose your base according to the area: in El Bierzo, towns such as Villafranca, Cacabelos or Ponferrada offer charming hotels and restored country houses just a step away from the mencía and godello wineries of the Sil valley. To the south, the Los Oteros region and Valencia de Don Juan bring the traveller closer to the world of prieto picudo.
Anyone walking the Camino will find lodgings for every taste in Astorga and in the city of León, including the parador of San Marcos. In La Maragatería and the mountains, stone and slate houses abound, perfect for sleeping amid tastings and silence.
León's cuisine is hearty and deeply rooted. Botillo del Bierzo, cecina, black pudding and the cocido maragato of Astorga call for full-bodied red wines, and the mencías of El Bierzo answer with fruit and freshness. The roasted peppers of Fresno de la Vega and the chestnuts of the valley round out the larder.
On a tasting tour through the province, the mantecadas of Astorga and the roast lamb of the páramo are never far away. The godello whites and the young reds of the D.O. León, made from prieto picudo, pair effortlessly with the cured meats, cheeses and stews of this generous land.
León combines vineyards with first-rate landscapes. Las Médulas, the ancient Roman gold mine declared a World Heritage Site, offers trails among reddish rock walls near the wineries of El Bierzo. The Valporquero Cave, the Picos de Europa and the Sil and Órbigo valleys invite you to walk between days of tasting.
The Camino de Santiago crosses the province, threading together Astorga, Hospital de Órbigo and the capital. Ponferrada guards its Templar castle, and villages of La Maragatería such as Castrillo de los Polvazares preserve the flavour of the muleteers alongside very accessible wine routes.
The capital treasures one of Europe's great Gothic cathedrals, famed for its stained glass, along with the Basilica of San Isidoro with its Royal Pantheon and the Casa Botines designed by Gaudí. Astorga adds the Gaudí-designed Episcopal Palace and a rich Roman and pilgrimage legacy.
Wine is part of that heritage: the cave-cellars carved into the hills of the Los Oteros region and El Bierzo speak of a centuries-old winemaking tradition. Museums, Mozarabic churches and the slate architecture of El Bierzo weave together a heritage that converses with every vineyard.
The outdoors shines in León. In El Bierzo, the surroundings of Las Médulas and the banks of the Sil offer campsites and motorhome areas among chestnut trees and terraced vines. To the north, the Picos de Europa and the valleys of the eastern mountains provide high-mountain spots for camping with permission.
The Babia region, the Pajares passes and the woodlands of La Maragatería are cool destinations in summer. Travelling by motorhome lets you link wineries, stone villages and trout rivers like the Órbigo, sleeping close to nature and the vineyard.
