Heredad San Andres

◍ La Rioja

About the winery

Heredad San Andrés is the family winery that makes the Cupani wines in San Vicente de la Sonsierra (La Rioja), within the D.O.Ca. Rioja. It was born in the early 2000s, when Enrique Eguíluz and Magdalena de Mendoza bought a small old winery in the village; today they run it with their sons Enrique and Miguel, who is in charge of winemaking. They work only with their own grapes from old Tempranillo, Garnacha and Viura vines farmed without herbicides, such as the San Andrés plot, on a clay-limestone slope next to the necropolis of the same name. Cupani is an old synonym for Tempranillo recorded in a 19th-century viticulture treatise. Production is small, and the wines include Cupani, Sir Cupani, Baskunes, Rielo and Cupani Garnacha. Visits are by appointment.
