About the winery

María Zamarreño is a small winery in the Bierzo D.O. working small vineyards spread across the east and west of the region, at 600 to 700 metres, with vines around sixty years old on average and certified organic farming. Its main wine is Van Gus Vana, a 100% Mencía red from plots such as Las Barreiras, Peña Verteira, Pedrisqueira, Mulacina and Cuetos, in Molinaseca, Congosto, Arlanza and San Juan de Paluezas, on sand, clay and limestone. The grapes are hand-picked into small crates and sorted on a table; the wine ferments in cement tanks and is aged for twelve months in new French oak barrels. It also makes Ratás, a crianza outside the appellation, and production is very limited.
