Mayorazgo Zacarías de Bivián is in Cuzcurrita de Río Tirón, in Rioja Alta, and its origins go back to 1699, when the village was a walled stronghold with a castle. Before phylloxera it was already ageing and bottling wines and cavas under its own label, something unusual in an area that sold almost everything in bulk. After the plague the vineyard was replanted, and in 1987 the winery renovated its facilities to focus solely on long-aged Rioja reds, Reservas and Grandes Reservas. They make wine the traditional way and let malolactic fermentation and stabilisation take place in barrel, with long waits in their underground cellar. Their current range includes the Reserva 2016 and the Gran Reserva 2005 and 1987.
