The vineyards grow on calcareous and alluvial soils at considerable altitude, under a continental climate of strong thermal contrast that brings colour and fruit. Ribera Del JucarThe Ribera del Júcar Designation of Origin obtained the qualification of Designation of Origin in 2003, still being a very young designation, but with good prospects for the near future. You can find this designation in the southern area of the province of Cuenca, covering a total of seven municipalities and nearly 900 winegrowers committed to the development and production of quality wines.
This young D.O.P. was created in 2003 and has an area of more than nine thousand hectares of vineyards, located in the Cuenca municipalities of Casas de Benítez, Casas de Fernando Alonso, Casas de Guijarro, Casas de Haro, El Picazo, Pozoamargo and Sisante.
The Protected Designation of Origin “Ribera del Júcar” is conceived as a multifunctional project revolving around the balance of the winegrowing ecosystem, its origin being environmentally respectful practices in the care of our vines and its objective the development of the winegrowers and of the inhabitants of our villages in general, through activities parallel to wine, such as ecotourism, winery visits and outdoor leisure alternatives.
The Protected Designation of Origin Ribera del Júcar was born as a joint initiative of a group of wine-producing cooperatives and private wineries in the province of Cuenca to actively collaborate in the production and marketing of quality wines
The production area of the D.O.P. Ribera del Júcar consists of deep clay-limestone soils and rounded pebbles, where we can find forest areas of great interest. The terrain is characterised by its horizontality, being made up of a plain. This horizontality is broken by the passage of the river that gives its name to this designation and by some wooded hills between Sisante and Casas de Haro.
With an average altitude of 750 m and a continental Mediterranean climate, the climate in this Cuenca area has high temperature contrasts between summer and winter. The average in summer is around 24ºC while in winter it is around 5ºC. Rainfall is around 450 mm/year, with a Mediterranean/dry humidity regime.
The red wines are slightly astringent, smooth and deep with a perfect acidity-tannin balance; the colour ranges between cherry red and ruby red with bluish and violet tones. On the nose, complex fruity aromas. They are flavourful, balanced and round; the whites maintain a balance of acidity and harmony.
The wines made by the DO Ribera del Júcar are mostly bottled red wines, and a small batch of white wines also bottled.
Syrah – Cluster and vine leafThe vine varieties included in the designation are, among the reds: Cencibel or Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Bobal, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, and among the white varieties Moscatel de Grano Menudo and Sauvignon Blanc.
50% of the varieties are between 35 and 40 years old, which ensures a good relationship between production and grape quality.
In this respect we would like to highlight, among these varieties, the «Bobal» variety and the «Moscatel de Grano Menudo» variety, deeply rooted in this area.
