Storing wine well at home does not require a movie-set cellar or a huge investment. Once you understand what a bottle needs to age peacefully, any corner can become a small home cellar.

Choosing the right spot

The ideal place is cool, dark and stable. Before thinking about shelving, look for a space away from heat sources, vibrations and direct light. An interior storage room, the bottom of a wardrobe or a nook under the stairs can work perfectly. What you are after is not luxury but constancy: a place that barely changes over the course of the year.

Temperature, humidity and light

These are the three factors that truly matter. The temperature should stay cool and, above all, stable; sharp swings are wine's worst enemy. Humidity must be enough to keep corks from drying out, without going so far as to ruin the labels. And as for light, the less the better: radiation deteriorates wine over time.

• Darkness: no direct sun or permanent lighting.

Store cork-stoppered bottles horizontally, so the wine keeps the cork moist and airtight. Reserve the upright position for sparkling wines and screw-cap bottles. A built-in rack, a metal one or a simple sturdy shelf all do the job; what matters is that the bottles stay still and accessible without having to move them all the time.

A system so you don't lose track

Once you go beyond a dozen bottles, it pays to keep count. Note what you have, from which vintage and when it is worth opening. A notebook or a spreadsheet is enough. That way you avoid two classics: forgetting a wine until it is past its moment, or uncorking too early one that still had a way to go.

Beyond the technical side, a home cellar is also a personal pleasure: the place where the wines you bring back from your trips and visits rest. Each bottle holds the memory of a meal or a getaway.
