Mujeres en la Vinicultura: Tejiendo Historias de Pasión y Persistencia

For centuries wine was told in the masculine, yet women were always there: in the vineyard, in the winery and at the head of entire projects. Today their role is more visible than ever and it is changing the sector from within.

From the shadows to centre stage

The history of wine is full of women who kept family wineries going, tended vineyards and made key decisions without their name ever appearing on the label. That discreet but constant presence was the foundation on which much of the sector we know today was built. The difference is that this work is now recognised and signed.

Winemakers, viticulturists and entrepreneurs

The change is felt at every link in the chain. More and more women lead production as oenologists, manage the vineyard as viticulturists or head up the business and commercial side of wineries. In oenology schools, the proportion of female students has grown notably, foreshadowing an even more balanced future.

  • In the vineyard: decisions on pruning, harvesting and soil management that shape the character of the wine.
  • In the winery: the oenological judgement that defines the style of each vintage.
  • In management: commercial strategy, export and brand communication.

A perspective that adds value

Beyond the question of justice, diversity enriches the result. Adding different sensibilities and ways of understanding the vine and the glass broadens the range of wines that reach the market. Many projects led by women have committed to recovering native varieties, to sustainable viticulture or to styles that break with the established order.

The road still ahead

The progress is real, but the balance is not yet complete, especially in the most senior positions. Giving visibility to role models, supporting projects and telling these stories is part of what helps the next generation of viticulturists and winemakers to have an easier path.

The best way to support this talent is to get to know it up close. Many wineries led by women open their doors to visitors; you can find them in our directory and discover first-hand the wine they are making.
