A simple definition

A Denomination of Origin is the name of a region, district or place officially recognised to designate wines that meet specific conditions. In other words: it is not enough to make wine in an area; it has to be made following rules that the denomination itself sets and monitors. That name on the label is a promise of provenance and of a way of making wine.

What it guarantees in practice

Behind the three letters there is a set of specifications that usually establishes aspects such as these:

• Production area: the grapes must come from a delimited territory.
• Authorised varieties: only certain grapes are permitted.
• Growing and winemaking practices: yields, ageing, methods.
• Quality controls: tastings and analyses before reaching the market.

All of this is overseen by a Regulatory Council, the body responsible for defending the name and ensuring that whoever uses it complies with the rules.

The road to becoming a D.O.

A Denomination of Origin is not improvised. Generally, an area must first have proven its worth as a Protected Geographical Indication over a period of years. It is a recognition earned over time, with wines that maintain a level and a recognisable identity. That is why the map of Spanish denominations reflects centuries of winegrowing tradition.

More than a label

The D.O. not only protects the consumer against fraud; it also supports producers. It prevents anyone from appropriating a prestigious name and guarantees that the effort of a whole district translates into market value. Is it an absolute guarantee of quality?

It is best to be honest: the D.O. ensures provenance and control, but within a single denomination excellent wines and merely correct wines coexist. It is a floor of guarantees, not a ceiling. The drinker's judgement remains irreplaceable, and it is trained by tasting and comparing.
