Organic and biodynamic are not trendy labels: they are two ways of understanding the vineyard as a living being. We explain how they differ, what they seek in the glass and how to recognise them when you visit a winery.
Behind an organic wine there is an underlying decision: to care for the soil as if it were part of the winery. Organic viticulture forgoes synthetic herbicides and pesticides, and commits to keeping the land alive, with cover crops, beneficial insects and respectful handling of the vine. The logic is simple: what you nurture in the soil ends up reflected in the grape and, therefore, in the glass.
Biodynamics starts from organic farming and adds a broader view, that of the estate as a complete organism. It works with natural preparations, pays attention to nature's cycles and seeks balance between vine, soil and surroundings. It is a more demanding and sometimes controversial approach, but many growers who practise it argue that their vineyards are more resilient and their wines more expressive of the place where they are born.
There is no magic recipe, but those who work this way usually aim for wines that speak clearly of the terroir. Among the things they seek, several traits stand out:
It's worth clearing up a common confusion: organic does not automatically mean better, nor does it mean natural wine. They are concepts that overlap, but they are not the same, and each winery interprets them in its own way.
On the label, certified organic wine usually carries the corresponding European seal. Biodynamics, on the other hand, relies on private certifications and does not always appear visibly, so often the best clue is to ask directly at the winery. That is where a visit makes sense: seeing the cover crops between the vines, hearing how they work and tasting with that information in front of you completely changes the experience.
If you want to dig deeper before booking, it will help to know how to visit a winery and what to ask during the tasting to truly understand its philosophy of work.
What is interesting about organic and biodynamic is not the trend, but the intention. These are wines made by people who have decided to take on more risk and more manual work in exchange for something hard to measure in an analysis: honesty with the place. You won't like all of them, and that too is part of the game. But if you approach them with curiosity, tasting and asking at source, you will discover a different way of enjoying wine, closer to the land that saw it born.
