See the D.O. Cava →In Tierra de Barros, with Almendralejo as its wine heart, country houses and charming hotels abound, ideal for a wine-tourism getaway through the Ribera del Guadiana. Zafra, nicknamed Little Seville, offers its parador within the alcázar and a lively old town to make your base.
Those who prefer to combine vineyard and city can stay near Mérida or Olivenza, or seek rural lodgings in La Serena and the Vegas del Guadiana, among reservoirs and dehesas, a step away from the wineries where you can taste tempranillo and cayetana blanca.
The cuisine of Badajoz is born of the dehesa: acorn-fed Iberian ham, loin and chorizos that call for a young red from the Ribera del Guadiana. Lamb caldereta and cochifrito hold their own alongside the full-bodied tempranillos of Tierra de Barros.
There is no shortage of migas extremeñas, spreadable Serena cheese and desserts such as the técula mécula of Olivenza or the perrunillas. A fino or a cava from Almendralejo pairs wonderfully with the aperitif before sitting down at the table.
Besides touring vineyards, Badajoz invites you to stroll through Roman Mérida, with its theatre, its amphitheatre and the bridge over the Guadiana. Zafra, Feria and Olivenza, with its Portuguese air, string together squares, churches and castles that deserve a full day.
Nature lovers have the Cornalvo Natural Park, the Sierra Grande de Hornachos and the great reservoirs of La Serena and Orellana, good for birdwatching, bathing or a leisurely route between wine tastings.
The historical depth of the province is immense: Mérida preserves one of the most complete Roman ensembles in Hispania, with its National Museum of Roman Art, while the Alcazaba of Badajoz recalls the city's Andalusian past.
The wine tradition of Tierra de Barros is felt in the wineries and presses of Almendralejo, where wine tourism dialogues with the Carnival, the processions and a wine culture that dates back to Roman times on the banks of the Guadiana.
For sleeping outdoors, the reservoirs of La Serena, Orellana and Cornalvo offer quiet spots to pitch a tent or bring the motorhome among holm oaks and water. Orellana even flies a Blue Flag, something unusual in an inland dehesa.
To the south, the Sierra de Tentudía and the villages of the Campiña provide cool corners for the camping traveller, with service areas in several towns and routes that combine the wine of the Ribera del Guadiana with starry nights.
