Wine tourism in D.O. Abona
Abona is a designation of origin (DO) established in 1996 and headquartered in El Porís de Abona, (Arico), a town located in the south of the island of Tenerife, Canary Islands (Spain). It is the most recent designation of origin in Tenerife and is therefore in full expansion.
One of the most interesting peculiarities of this DO is that the growing area is spread across very diverse zones and climatic conditions. Areas reaching up to 1,700 metres above sea level and conditions verging on a semi-desert climate.
A unique region for unique wines
The scope of this Regulatory Council covers the vineyards located in the municipalities of Adeje, Arona, Vilaflor, San Miguel de Abona, Granadilla de Abona, Arico and Fasnia. In these municipalities, located in the south of the island of Tenerife, the vineyards are situated at an altitude ranging from 300 m above sea level up to 1,700 m above sea level. At this altitude, they are the highest-cultivated vineyards in Europe, magnificent vineyards with low yield per unit of surface area but with excellent quality parameters.
The Designation of Origin includes 1,200 winegrowers who cultivate a growing area of 1,200 hectares.
The land and the climate
In 1995 the D.O. Abona was approved, which includes the municipalities of Adeje, Arona, Vilaflor, San Miguel de Abona, Granadilla, Arico and Fasnia, in the south of the island. The vineyards of this region are mostly cultivated in jable soils (white volcanic ash) that produce very aromatic wines of great character.
Zones
The vineyard extends from 400 metres up to 1,700 metres in altitude, with two strata distinguished in relation to this factor.A midland level, ranging from 400 to 800 m, of highly porous volcanic soils capable of absorbing water from the ambient humidity, and a high zone which, from the edge of the midlands, reaches 1,700 m in Vilaflor, a truly astonishing altitude for growing vines.
Microclimates
The climate is very sunny and dry, although, owing to its orientation, it may still receive some effect from the trade-wind regime, especially in the higher zones. In any case, it is a mild Mediterranean climate, with extraordinary healthy conditions, allowing a vine cultivation in which phytosanitary treatments are practically unnecessary.
