The Catalan table shines with pa amb tomàquet, escalivada, the xató of the Penedès and, in season, the calçotada washed down with a red from the Denominación de Origen Catalunya. Butifarra with Montseny mushrooms calls for a macabeo or a xarel·lo from the Penedès.

The cava of Sant Sadurní d'Anoia is a natural companion to seafood and to mar i muntanya dishes, and rounds off any meal alongside a crema catalana. Each district, from the Bages to Alella, adds its nuance to the tasting.

Wine has been part of Catalan identity since Roman times, and so it is told at the VINSEUM, the Museum of the Wine Cultures of Catalonia, in the very centre of Vilafranca del Penedès. The underground cava cellars of Sant Sadurní are another lesson in living heritage.

Modernism permeates everything, from Gaudí's works in Barcelona and the Colonia Güell to the cathedral-style wineries designed by his disciples. Festivals, castellers and sardanas complete a very rich cultural calendar.

Summer: June, July, August and September are perfect for visiting the Costa Brava beaches. Barcelona in summer is a world tourist benchmark thanks to its excellent urban, cosmopolitan atmosphere and its Barceloneta beach. Winter: December, January and February are the best months to ski in the Catalan Pyrenees. Spring and autumn: March to May and September to December are good for visiting the Montseny and Montnegre i el Corredor natural parks, as well as the Collserola hills.
