Wine tourism in D.O. Valle de Güimar

The D.O. of Valle de Güímar was created in 1995. It lies in the south-east of the island and comprises Arafo, Candelaria and Güímar. The vineyard extends from areas close to the coast to altitudes near 1,500 metres. The volcanic soils and the predominance of the trade winds mark the distinctive essence of its wines.

A unique region for unique wines

The vineyard area in Valle de Güímar covers 720 hectares and it is not a valley in the geographical sense of the term. It corresponds to a tectonic trench originated by the seaward slippage of a great mass of land. The area in which the Denomination of Origin Valle de Güímar is set, located on the southern slope, forms a rectangle of about 18 km in length by 8 km in width.

The land and the climate

Denomination-of-origin classification reached Valle de Güímar in 1996. It is located on the south-east coast of the island and covers a surface of 720 hectares, between altitudes ranging from 175 to 1,500 metres.

Areas

The vine extends across the comarca from the areas close to the coast to elevations near 1,500 m, making it one of the highest vineyard areas in Spain and in the World.The area has a great variety of different soils, which can be grouped into three broad groups:

• Soils of the upper part, between 800 and 1,500 m in altitude, generally unirrigated.
• Soils of vineyards planted on recent volcanic lava flows.
• Coastal and mid-slope soils (elevations of 150-700 m).

Microclimates

The vineyard extends across this comarca from areas near the coast to very high elevations, close to 1,500 metres. The predominance of the trade winds marks the character and personality of the wine.

The Valle de Güímar comarca devotes approximately 65% of the vineyard to the production of white grape varieties while the remaining 35% goes to the red varieties.

Authorised: Bastardo negro, Vijariego negro.Preferred: Listán negro, Malvasía rosada, Moscatel negro , Negramoll.

Whites

Authorised: Listán blanco, Moscatel, Vijariego.Preferred: Gual, Malvasía , Verdello.
