Málaga tastes of the sea and of sweetness. The espeto of sardines grilled on the shore, the fried fish and the anchovies call for a local wine, and here the celebrated sweet wine of Málaga, from moscatel and Pedro Ximénez, reigns supreme. The ajoblanco of Almáchar, with almond and grapes, refreshes the summer.

Inland, the porra antequerana, gazpacho and the vegetables of the fertile plain triumph. The raisins of La Axarquía, with a Denomination of Origin, accompany cheeses and desserts, while the dry reds of the Serranía de Ronda pair with meats and game stews.

Málaga, birthplace of Picasso, boasts the museum dedicated to the painter, the Carmen Thyssen Museum, the Alcazaba, the Gibralfaro castle and its cathedral, nicknamed La Manquita for its unfinished tower, beside the Roman Theatre. It is a capital that breathes art and millennia of history.

The tradition of sweet wine is part of that culture: the historic wineries of the city and the raisin drying-sheds of La Axarquía keep alive a winemaking with Phoenician roots. The dolmens of Antequera, a World Heritage Site, take the provincial legacy even further back.
