Wine tourism in D.O.P. Cangas
The D.O.P. Cangas is the one that brings together the best wines currently made in Asturias. This production area is located in the southwest of the Principality and comprises the councils of Cangas del Narcea, Allande, Grandas de Salime, Illano, Pesoz, Ibias and Tineo. The cultivation of the vine in these lands dates back to the 9th century and experienced its best period in the 19th. At that time, the planted vineyard reached an area of 1,952 hectares and the wines born there came to win awards in both national and international competitions.
A unique region for unique wines
The southwest of Asturias has a broad wine-growing tradition that goes back more than a thousand years and whose origin is linked to the Monastery of Corias. The Asturian wineries are tiny, artisan, we could even say family-run. The steep terrain of the area is quite a surprise for the visitor, who is also usually captivated by the originality of the wines. One can stroll through the vineyard, learn about the production process, discover the native varieties, observe the barrel park and even taste the wines of the different wineries.

Cangas meets the requirements to be classified as Mountain Viticulture by CERVIM (Centre for Research, Study, Safeguarding, Coordination and Enhancement of Mountain Viticulture), an exclusivity that in Spanish territory it shares only with the D.O.P. Ribeira Sacra, D.O.P. Islas Canarias and the D.O.P. Priorat.
The land and the climate
The production area of grapes for the making of the wines protected by the Protected Designation of Origin Cangas is made up of the lands which, on the basis of exclusively technical criteria, are considered especially suitable for the production of grapes with the necessary quality and which are located in the municipal districts of: Allande, Cangas del Narcea, Degaña, Grandas de Salime, Ibias, Illano, Pesoz and some areas belonging to the municipal district of Tineo.
Zones
In the production areas of the Protected Designation of Origin Cangas the landscape is rugged, mountainous, and on its slopes the vineyards are set, on steep gradients, which make their maintenance and cultivation difficult, heroic. To visit the area is to go back in time: centuries-old forests and vineyards, traditional trades…. A mixture of tradition and evolution which in viticulture translates into pampered vineyards, to obtain a raw material of the finest quality.
Microclimates
The southwest of Asturias, where the D.O.P. Cangas is located, enjoys a special microclimate characterised by a smaller amount of rainfall and more hours of sunshine than in the rest of the region, favouring the right conditions for the cultivation of the vine.
