The D.O. Valdepeñas offers 14 wineries you can visit in the heart of Ciudad Real, deep in the southern Mancha. A land of great winemaking tradition and centuries-old wineries with clay tinajas, it is wine tourism of deep roots; filter the options by experience and book your visit and tasting.
The red relies on the local Tempranillo, called Cencibel, which gives gentle wines with soft ageing, while Airén dominates the light whites. The brown and limestone soils and the dry continental climate, with very hot summers, define the region. Easy-drinking reds that accompany roasts, Manchegan cheeses and local stews.

ValdepenasLocated in the south of Castilla-La Mancha, the production area of the Denomination of Origin Valdepeñas is presided over by the Jabalón river from east to west and covers 22,000 hectares of vineyards -some of them centuries old-, cared for by more than 2,500 farmers.
Despite being known worldwide as the “Denomination of Origin Valdepeñas”, its production area brings together ten municipal districts: Valdepeñas, Alcubillas, Moral de Calatrava, San Carlos del Valle, Santa Cruz de Mudela, Torrenueva, part of the district of Torre de Juan Abad, Granátula de Calatrava, Alhambra and Montiel.
Towns with many stories to tell, forever linked -like their wines- to the history of Spain through some of their sons or the historical events that took place on their soil, with names such as: Don Álvaro de Bazán, first Marquis of Santa Cruz; Francisco de Quevedo; or the regicide between Peter I and Henry II of Castile.
Although the Denomination of Origin Valdepeñas came into being in 1932 as set out in the Wine Statute, wine production in the area dates back to the 5th century BC, as proven by the scientific studies of the Iberian site “Cerro de las Cabezas” geographically located within what is today its production area.
The soils are poor in organic matter and of low fertility, an ideal circumstance for growing the vine. The region contains an abundance of limestone terrains, sandy loam and clayey soils of a yellowish-red colour which, fed by the area's scant rainfall (between 200 and 400 litres a year), endow the crop with great resistance. Interesting from the viticultural point of view are the hillsides, carpeted with quartzite stones, beneath which moisture is very well preserved while on their surface a large thermal difference is generated between day and night.
With more than 2,500 hours of sunshine a year and 300 clear days, these lands of continental climate can exceed maximum temperatures of 40ºC and minimums of -10ºC and even lower, with an annual average of 16ºC. These climatic features translate into well-ripened grapes and therefore into a production of wines of greater colouring intensity, optimal structure and aromatic power.
The wines of the Denomination of Origin Valdepeñas are “wines with stories to tell”.
They are made from grapes coming from plots with maximum yields of 6,000 kilos per hectare in red grape varieties and 7,500 kilos per hectare in white grape varieties.
The white grape varieties authorised in the D.O. Valdepeñas are: airén, macabeo or viura, verdejo, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and moscatel de grano menudo.
The red grape varieties authorised in the D.O. Valdepeñas are: tempranillo, syrah, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, garnacha and petit verdot.
In our wineries white, rosé, red and sparkling wines are made. In addition to dry wines, one can also find semi-dry, semi-sweet and sweet wines, whose quality is certified on the bottle with the seal of the Denomination of Origin.
Valdepeñas wines are balanced in alcohol and acidity, aromatic, very structured, colourful, with soft tannins on the palate and free of greenness. They are suitable for ageing or for being enjoyed young.
Valdepeñas wines are singular, characteristic of the personality of a unique continental terrain for the development of a resistant, low-yielding vineyard, and a climatology that records extreme temperatures with more than 2,500 hours of sunshine a year.
These peculiarities, combined with their exquisite and age-old production (in many cases with a marked family tradition passed down from generation to generation), translate into well-ripened grapes that result in wines of colouring intensity, optimal structure and aromatic power.
From its “gran reservas”, “reservas” and “crianzas”, cradled in barrels, to the fresh and aromatic “young” wines, the wines of D.O. Valdepeñas are exported to more than 100 countries and continue to captivate palates of all tastes seeking the excellence of the moment and pairings for every kind of gastronomy.
